There are certain tropes within our visual culture that have been arbitrarily gendered. Visual culture consistently reinforces these tropes, and they hold powerful connotations through which social understandings are often derived. I am interested in how gender plays a role within visual culture, and in exploring the ways in which we visually assign gender, whether that is to an object, an action, a body, etc.

In these works I intentionally play with visual gender signifiers and binaries in order to create images that make the viewer directly confront their visual perceptions of gender. I intend for these images to raise ambiguity and tension in relation to masculinity, femininity, and power relationships.
